While I sympathize greatly with the many victims in this situation (both avian and human), I am reminded of the biblical passage "For all who draw the sword will die by the sword." At the risk of sounding callous, these folks are keeping animals under potentially stressful conditions that differ greatly from their native habitat under the premise that the birds might be useful in helping to save mankind from infectious disease. They then hitched their farm up to the COnVID wagon, hoping that they can use these animals to help rid us of the imaginary scourge of COVID-19. Now they are shocked when the same government officials who perpetuated the COnVID mass hysteria, killing millions via iatrogenic and psychological harms, decide that, in order to foment a new mass fear event (avian flu), the animals on this farm must be euthanized? The owners of the farm, while I empathize with their pain, cannot be stunned when bitten by the snake they have been playing with. It is the nature of the snake.
Sadly, the news stories and the statements made by the farm owners and their supporters serve to reinforce many falsehoods and irrational fears brought to the surface over the past 5 years. "There is a risk of human transmission. There is a risk of illness and death." Where is the data to support this statement? A typically biased and emotional statement, in that the level of both risks is not explicitly stated and is left to the reader's interpretation. There is a risk of you being hit by a meteorite in your car and dying today, but I'm guessing you don't feel crippled with dread now that I've said that. The farm owners buy into the viral fear mentality by accusing the lazy, dirty ducks of infecting the ostriches, which is scientifically irrelevant. One of the most alarming falsehoods put forth by the farm owner is this - "A priority would be to work with wildlife to help mitigate migratory birds carrying the virus by using their technology already created to treat areas highly populated with migratory birds, just like the ducks in their field." And what sort of treatment would they propose? And what gives anyone the right to alter the environment of wild species, without completely understanding the spill over effects to all other creatures in the environment? And these folks claim to be working to support science?
If this influenza strain was as lethal and virulent as everyone here is insinuating and/or assuming, the ducks should have been dead before they ever reached the farm. The same would hold true for other bird species, both wild and farmed. Everyone involved in this sad scenario have chosen to voice emotional, but not scientifically sound appeals. If the evolution of species through the process of natural selection is true, the survival strength of all living things is a direct result of having the innate/genetic characteristics that enable them to survive all manner of environmental stress, not least of which is resistance to pathogens like viruses. The farm owners, the scientists they've been working with (shame on them especially), and the government should all welcome the exposure of all farmed bird species to this scary virus, since the birds who survive the exposure will have shown their genetic strength and will produce offspring with that same strength to survive potential future exposures. If you believe that you can rid the environment of viruses and similar pathogens, you are mistaken and such an approach is dangerously illogical. Likewise, even if vaccines functioned as we've been told and you believe that vaccines thereby strengthen the human species against death from contagious disease, sadly quite the opposite is likely true.
